While anti-government protests declined in the wake of the 7 October attacks, Mr Netanyahu’s popularity has fallen as the fighting goes on. Mass protests were regularly held throughout 2023 demanding his resignation – fuelled by opposition to controversial judicial reforms. Mr Netanyahu is now also under pressure over the fate of the dozens of hostages taken from Israel by Hamas fighters on 7 October and held in Gaza.
