Donald Trump has told a campaign rally that he would encourage Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to Nato members who do not pay their fair share into the Western military alliance.

He was referring to a conversation with a leader of an unspecified Nato country, who he claims asked him: “If we don’t pay, are you still going to protect us?” Mr Trump recalled that he responded to say “absolutely not.”
